User Guide: Configuring SSL in Cireson Portal

Preparation

In order to enable SSL in the Cireson Portal, you must install a valid SSL certificate. Follow these instructions to generate and install your SSL certificate to the server running the Cireson Portal.

Note: This is just one of many ways to create an SSL Certificate.

Create the SSL Certificate

Click on the Windows icon in the taskbar, Search for IIS, and open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

Note: The Cireson Portal installer will automatically install IIS. If IIS is not installed, run the Cireson Portal installer once and then restart the server.

Click on the name of the server in the Connections column on the left. Double click the Server Certificates icon.

In the Actions column on the right hand side, click on Create Self Signed Certificate.

Enter the friendly name you wish to use to identify the certificate, and then click OK.

You now have an IIS Self Signed Certificate, valid for one year, which will be listed under Server Certificates. The common name, is the server name.

How to enable SSL during Cireson Portal Installation

If you are installing the Cireson Portal for the first time, or you are performing an upgrade to the latest version of the Cireson Portal, you can add an SSL certificate during installation.

At the settings page of the Cireson Portal installer, you will find Advanced Website Settings, expand it

Here you will need to select the SSL Certificate from the dropdown box and the Port (if that needs to be changed, default is 443)

How to enable SSL after the Cireson Portal has been Installed

If the Cireson Portal is already installed, you can follow these steps to add SSL to your Cireson Portal installation

Browse to the connections column on the left hand side, expand the sites folder and click on the website you wish to bind the SSL certificate to. Once you've done that, on the right hand side, click on Bindings in the Actions column.

Click the Add.. button.

Click the Type drop down menu. Select https .  Click on the SSL Certificate drop down, choose the newly created SSL certificate. Click OK.

You should now see the bindings for port 443. You can now on click Close.

You will also need to configure the platform_cache service to use the same certificate.  See this article for configuring the platform service for SLL.

Testing the Certificate

To test the new Self Signed SSL Certificate, open up a browser, and go to the website. If the certificate has been installed and created correctly, depending on the browser you are using, you will see a lock icon next to the URL, or it will say Secure.
